Shoebox PDF tries to reach your target while keeping text selectable and searchable. Some files can only get small enough if their pages are turned into images, which means the text can no longer be selected. When that's the case, the app asks you first. The choice is yours.

Open a PDF with form fields and tap a field to type. You can also add text anywhere on the page. Flatten the form when you're done so the answers can't be changed by accident.

Draw your signature once, then place it on any document. Saved signatures stay on your device unless you sync them between your own devices with iCloud Sync (My Devices). They are excluded from device backups, so without sync you may need to draw yours again after restoring to a new device.

On your device, inside Shoebox PDF's own storage. Nothing is uploaded by the app unless you turn on iCloud sync or your own AI server.

Yes, optionally. Turn on Settings → iCloud Sync (My Devices). Your documents, tags and people list sync through a private zone in your own iCloud account, never shared and never to us. "Include signatures and Family Profiles" also syncs those between your own devices; turn it off to keep them on this device and remove the iCloud copies.

An optional shared family folder, off by default. When you turn it on, documents in that folder sync between your family members' devices through Apple's iCloud, using each person's own Apple Account. They never go to us and we can't see them. Saved signatures, Family Profiles and your people list are never shared with your family. To turn it off, go to Settings → Family Sharing → Family Sharing via iCloud.

Your documents are included in your normal iCloud Backup or computer backup of the device, depending on your iOS settings. To check iCloud Backup, open Settings, tap your name, then iCloud, then iCloud Backup. You can also export any document with the Share Sheet to keep a copy elsewhere.

Open the Shortcuts app, create a shortcut, and search for Shoebox PDF to find the Compress, Combine, Scan and File Document actions. You can run them from Siri by the shortcut's name.

In another app, tap Share on a PDF, scroll the row of actions, and tap Edit Actions to turn on Compress to 1, 2, 5 or 10 MB and Save to Shoebox. You can add them to Favorites so they stay near the top.

These optional suggestions use Apple Intelligence, so they're available only on devices and iOS/iPadOS versions that support Apple Intelligence, with it turned on. Alternatively, they can use your own AI server (see below). Everything else in the app works without either.

Yes, optionally. Go to Settings → Apple Intelligence & AI → My AI Server to connect an OpenAI-compatible AI server you run yourself. It can power Summary & Form Help and auto-file and auto-name suggestions. Only the document text needed for each request is sent, only to your server, never to us. Apple Intelligence on the device is used first unless you choose "Prefer my server". Your API key stays in this device's Keychain and never syncs. Turn off "Use My AI Server" to stop.
